Rules and Regulations

The 3rd Marcello Giordani Foundation International Vocal Competition

Vero Beach, Fl.

The Marcello Giordani Foundation, in collaboration with and under the sponsorship of Vero Beach Opera, presents its 3rd  International Vocal Competition to be held in Vero Beach, Florida. The purpose of the Marcello Giordani Foundation is to provide young singers with the opportunity to achieve their musical aspirations and to demonstrate their talent, as well as to offer the general public a venue to experience the performing arts and the cultural benefits that the performing arts provide. 

ART. 1
The Competition is open to singers of all nationalities between the ages of 21 and 35. Selection and admission to the Competition will be based on a Committee’s evaluation of the application form submitted by the applicant, including the MP3 formatted voice samples and other required documentation.  A maximum of 125 contestants will be admitted.  There is NO registration fee.

ART. 2
The submitted program must include 5 opera arias to be performed in the original language, two of which must be in Italian. 

ART. 3
The Competition will be held at Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center from March 25 to March 30, 2013.  The Final Selection will take place on the evening of March 30, 2013 in concert form with piano accompaniment at the end of which the winners will be announced.

 ART. 4
The Competition consists of three rounds:

March 25, 26 and 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.

Performance of a piece chosen by the contestant among those submitted. The Jury may request the performance of a second piece. The Jury may interrupt the performance of a piece at any time and for any reason it deems appropriate.

March 28, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.

Performance of a piece chosen by the Jury among those submitted by the contestant. The Jury may request the performance of a second piece. The Jury may interrupt the performance at any time and for any reason it deems appropriate.

March 30, 2013 at  7:00 p.m.

Performance of one or two pieces indisputably chosen by the Jury among those submitted by the contestant.

ART. 5
The following prizes will be awarded in accordance with the final and indisputable decision of the Jury:

First Prize      $10,000       Marcello Giordani Foundation
                   (in memory of Michele Gualgiardo, father of Marcello Giordani)

Second Prize  $5,000         The Sergio Franchi Music Foundation

Third Prize     $3,000          Vero Beach Opera, Inc.

The following prizes will also be awarded to deserving finalists at the Jury’s discretion:

- Engagement for one or more roles during the next season of La Fenice, Venice


- Two/three scholarships for participation in the Masterclass of Advanced Vocal Specialization with tenor Marcello Giordani during the academic year 2013/14 at the Teatro Massimo Bellini of Catania, Italy (free attendance and boarding)

 ART. 6
Applications must be sent by e-mail to:

Contestants must specify:

1. Full name
2. Place and date of birth
3. Address
4. Telephone numbers and e-mail address
5. Voice type
6. Academic and artistic background
7. List of all submitted pieces including names of composers and titles

The application must include the following attachments:

  • Photocopy of birth certificate or other legal proof of age such as driver’s license or passport
  • One headshot
  • MP3 formatted voice samples of two (2) opera arias in original language, preferably in Italian or French

ART. 7
After review of the applications by the Competition Committee, those applicants selected to participate in the Competition will be notified by electronic mail.  At that time, applicants will be required to sign a release form as part of the final application process.

The performance order will be established by the Competition Administrator, and applicants will be notified by electronic mail of the dates and place to report to the Competition.

 ART. 8
All contestants must bring scores of the submitted pieces for piano and voice. The contestants who are not present at the preliminary round will be eliminated unless their absence is approved in advance by the Competition Administrator.

The names of the contestants admitted to the subsequent rounds will be posted at the end of each session. The finals, in concert form, will be open to the public and the media. Piano accompanists will be provided at no charge to the contestant; however, if desired, contestants may provide an accompanist of their own choosing at their own expense.

ART. 9
The vote will be by secret ballot as per internal regulations. The Jury’s judgment is final and indisputable.  The Jury may decide not to award some of the prizes if it determines that there are no deserving contestants.

 ART. 10
The Jury, presided over by tenor Marcello Giordani, will include personalities of the international opera world (artistic directors, conductors, international agents). The members of the Jury cannot have family ties or working relationships with any of the contestants. Members of the Jury who have been in a teacher-student relationship with a contestant within the last two years must declare this before the beginning of the competition and must refrain from voting with regard to that contestant.

ART. 11

The Competition Administrator reserves the right to make any modifications to the Rules and Regulations.  Applicants must indicate that they have read and agree to abide with the provisions set forth in the Competition’s Rules and Regulations and with the final decisions of the Jury by checking the appropriate box in the application form.

Registration in the Competition implies the acceptance of the provisions included in the Rules and Regulations, as well as authorization to use the contestant’s personal data for communication and selection purposes.

ART. 12
Any recording and/or video and/or audio broadcast of the various phases of the Competition, including the Final Concert, does not give the contestants any right to compensation. The contestants will be required to sign a release that waives any rights to recorded material that is published for promotional purposes.
